Rick Rule, co-founder of Battle Bank and founder of Rule Investment Media, discussed various economic topics, including the impact of recent political actions. He explained that, while certain political statements may sound promising, the real impact depends on policy execution. As Rule put it, “Pronouncements are not the same as policy. Attempting to get done everything that he would like to get done is going to be more political and involve much more process than he and perhaps some voters would prefer.” He also highlighted how changes in regulatory environments could benefit extractive industries, including oil, gas, and mining, particularly with the removal of non-judicial obstacles. However, he cautioned that local and state-level opposition may still persist, citing the case of a major copper deposit in Arizona as an example of how local opposition can hinder progress despite federal support.
On the US economy, Rule highlighted the enormous fiscal challenges, with government debt exceeding $36 trillion and unfunded liabilities over $100 trillion. He cautioned that the proposed solutions, like taxing billionaires, don’t add up and won’t fix the underlying issues. As he explained, “The aggregate net wealth of America’s billionaires is $5.6 trillion. If rather than raise their taxes you simply stole all their money, which is probably what Bernie would prefer, you would fund the deficit for a year and then there’d be no money left.” Despite this, Rule remains optimistic about the long-term prospects for the US economy, especially in mining and technology, even though short-term fiscal challenges remain.
